Online Master of Science in Biology Program

The Department of Biology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney offers a full curriculum distance Master of Science degree in Biology. This program was developed for students who cannot participate in an on-campus degree program. This is especially helpful for people who have careers in which advanced education in biology is desirable, or for people seeking such a career.  Our program is growing and diversified with an energetic faculty who are willing to explore a wide variety of research interests.

The Department of Biology at UNK offers a Master of Science degree designed to provide a high quality, multidimensional graduate education that fosters the development of critical thinking skills. Students will be exposed to a diversity of classes and experiences on a broad range of biological topics. Through this degree, students will be prepared for success in a variety of careers in the field of biology.

Our Commitment to Students and Graduate Education

The UNK Department of Biology is a leader in graduate education (distance and on-campus) with classes in physiology, biochemistry, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, molecular evolution, genetics, botany, zoology, and Geographic Information Systems, providing opportunities for both applied and basic research.  Interdisciplinary studies are emphasized with collaborations aimed at solving modern biological problems.

The Department of Biology consists of 20 graduate faculty, which is large enough to have a person with expertise in your area of interest, yet small enough that students can build professional relationships with individual faculty members.  Faculty make a concerted effort to maintain good communication with distance students as well, resulting in the establishment of strong mentoring relationships with UNK faculty.  A low student to faculty ratio assures the individual guidance necessary for a positive overall experience and successful completion of the program.

Our program is diverse with energetic faculty who are willing to explore a wide variety of research interests.  Faculty efforts have generated millions in external funding, which has led to numerous peer-reviewed publications. In addition, the Department of Biology has state of the art equipment, where students and faculty have access to the most recent tools in scientific technology. The Department of Biology at UNK is well suited to offer students advanced educational and professional opportunities.

UNK is committed to supporting all of our graduate students, on-campus and distance. The Graduate College has instituted twenty-four hour assistance with the computer help line and library help services. UNK also offers small research and travel grants to both on-campus and distance students who are completing research projects. Another advantage of completing a graduate degree at UNK is its central location. For field studies, UNK’s unique location puts it in close proximity to many different ecosystems and has provided extensive research collections of plants and animals. Students from across the U.S. and abroad have access to the UNK distance program.
